Job Details
Duties include, but are not limited to:
  • Serve as a professional role model in demonstrating competent nursing practice;
  • Follow the guidelines of the CNO;
  • Develop rapport with clinical agencies/nursing units;
  • Participate in regularly scheduled clinical orientation workshops and clinical instructor’s meetings;
  • Support and contribute to the Practical Nursing, PSW and/or standalone BScN curriculum;
  • Prepare relevant, safe and curriculum appropriate clinical patient assignments;
  • Engage student learning in the clinical setting;
  • Evaluate student progress and achievement (during and following clinical practice) and provide timely constructive feedback;
  • Conduct innovative pre-clinical and post-clinical conferences in order to shape an overall learning experience;
  • Evaluate written work following clinical practice;
  • Complete drug calculation testing with students;
  • Actively contribute to and evaluate the success of a diverse learner population;
  • Apply the nursing process, relevant provincial nursing legislation, guidelines and professional standards to all aspects of clinical nursing education;
  • Provide a learning environment that makes effective use of a variety of teaching and learning strategies to meet various learning styles;
  • Submit availability to the Manager, Healthcare programs, on a semester by semester basis; and;
  • Work in compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act
Job Requirements

A detailed description of responsibilities per the classification definition of Professor is available in the Academic Collective Agreement (http://www.thecouncil.on.ca/). This position involves up to 36 weeks of assigned contact per academic year and may be in any of three semesters at the College’s discretion and may include weekend work.

Candidates must possess the following:
  • PN Diploma or Degree in Nursing from a recognized College or University; only those with an RN designation will be able to clinical instruct with our PN, PSW, and our standalone BScN program students. RPN’s will be considered for PN and PSW clinical placements.
  • Registration in good standing, no restrictions, with the College of Nurses of Ontario;
  • Membership with a Nursing Professional organization in Ontario including in the Legal Assistance Program (or Malpractice Insurance);
  • Recent and relevant clinical experience in one or more of the following areas: acute medicine, general surgery, complex chronic care, rehabilitation, long term care, pediatrics, obstetrics, and/or mental health;
  • A minimum of five or more years of active full-time nursing experience;
  • Clinical teaching experience at either the College or University level working with small groups of students, or in a preceptorship/mentoring program affiliated with a novice learner.

The preferred candidate will have:
  • A Bachelor or Master’s degree in Nursing with a previous diploma in Practical Nursing;
  • A current specialty certification with the Canadian Nurses Association (CASN);
  • Experience in the use of clinical simulation as a complement to nursing education;
  • Advanced nursing experience in the areas of clinical education, nursing leadership and management;
  • A proven commitment to nursing research, education, scholarship and other professional nursing activities;
  • A demonstrated ability to work with, and teach a diverse student population, and work with colleagues or clients from various backgrounds;
  • An established ability to contribute to a team; and
  • A demonstrated commitment to life-long learning as evidenced by professional development in areas such as clinical simulation, leadership, best practice guideline implementation, eHealth and wound care.
